ARTIST STATEMENT: When deciding what songs to record for our 2018 album Hard Time in the Country, we stumbled across the song 'No Irish Need Apply'. After much back and forth over how this song would be interpreted by our listeners, we decided to record it as a reminder that the Irish (as well as the Polish, Italian, Scandinavians, etc.) were once the object of scrutiny, fear-mongering, hatred and outright prejudice. This song was not recorded to stake any claim to Irish victimization, nor was it recorded with any intention of comparing the Irish experience to any other ethnicity's experience, be they refugee, economic migrant, slave or otherwise.
If we have a moral or message in recording this song, it is certainly NOT that white and Irish folks are still discriminated against. We are not. In so many cases, we are now the ones causing this harm by discriminating against our African, Latino, Middle Eastern, Asian and, ironically, our Native neighbors. White privilege does exist. We experience it every day. We believe that it is a disservice to our immigrant roots to treat newcomers with anything other than hospitality and warmth as we continue to write our next chapters of American history.

lyrics
I'm a decent boy just landed from the town of Ballyfad
I want a situation, and want it very bad
I’ve seen employment advertised - "It's just the thing," says I
But the dirty advert ended with 'No Irish Need Apply'
"Woah," says I, "but that’s an insult, to get the gig I'll try"
So I went to see this blaggard with his 'No Irish Need Apply'
Some think that it’s misfortune to be christened Pat or Dan
But to me it is an honor to be born an Irishman
Well I started out to find the house, I got it mighty soon
There I found the old chap seated, he was reading the Tribune
I told him what I came for, when he in a rage did fly
"No!" he says, "you are a Paddy, and no Irish need apply"
Well I gets my dander risin', I'd like to black his eye
To tell an Irish gentleman, 'No Irish Need Apply'
Well I couldn't stand it longer, so ahold of him I took
And I gave him such a beating as he'd get at Donnybrook
He hollered "Milia murther," and to get away did try
And swore he'd never write again 'No Irish Need Apply'
He made a big apology, I bid him then good-bye
Saying "next you want a beating, write 'No Irish Need Apply'"
